Wood Stove Fans: Choosing one that's right for your needs

Wood stove fans might not be on the top of your list when it comes to accessories for your stove. However, it's time to stop and reconsider. These fans are actually quite important when it comes to maximizing the heating ability of your wood stove. Since wood stoves are a source of radiant heat, they may not be able to transfer it into the far corners of the house. That's where wood stove fans come in handy. They can deal with this problem by evenly distributing the heat through your home, avoiding hot and cold spots and allowing you to use less fuel to stay warm.

There are two basic types of wood stove fans. The first are electric powered. They're very effective, but they also bring up the cost of running your stove, since they can increase your electrical bill. Also, electric fans may not hold up with exposure to the high heat from a wood burning fire.

The second type of wood stove fan is the self powered fan, which works using the heat that the stove produces. There are several different ways that this can work, including steam powered stove fans and a method that uses what's called the Peltier Seeback effect. In this case, the fan acts as a large heat sink. Heat is drawn up through an aluminium base, in which a device called a Peltier cooler is mounted. The temperature differential between different parts of the aluminium creates very low voltage electricity, which turns the fan.

These types of wood stove fans are made by the popular Ecofans brand, and has the advantage of not using any additional energy, while still providing enough power to adequately distribute heat throughout your home. Fans of this type are also somewhat less expensive than electric blowers, which may be good for people on a budget.

No matter what types of wood stove fans you choose, there are some features to look for. Find a fan that operates quietly, to minimize unwanted motor noises. Look for quality construction out of materials that are able to withstand the temperatures that are produced by your stove, and that won't corrode. A warranty of at least a year is also desirable. If you have any questions about wood stove fans, ask the supplier where you purchased your stove, or check online.

You can find these fans sold locally in home and hardware stores, or through Internet retailers. If you decide to purchase online, you could get a great deal. Just be sure to calculate shipping costs when you decide what to buy. No matter where you choose to purchase, or what kind of wood stove fans you decide on, look for quality as well as a good price. A good wood stove fan might be what you need to improve your stove's heating ability.
