Finding a passive solar home
plan that fits your needs

Each passive solar home plan below is taken from a compilation published in 1982 following a design competition. They were selected from over 500 entries submitted by architects, builders and designers.

In the years leading up to the 1980s, high heating oil prices had generated interest and enthusiasm toward passive solar home design like never before. Innovation and imagination reigned supreme, and it shows, for some of these designs are pretty unusual compared to most of today's solar house designs. Each plan contains two or three drawings giving the concept, and a description of the way the solar energy (or heat) is collected, then stored and distributed through the house.
